6th gen short battery life

I got a new (refurbished) iPod Touch 6th gen. Without doing anything different than on my old 5th gen, the battery life is horrible. I typically have to charge it 1-2 times a day, in addition to regular overnight charging. 

I've made 3 trips to the nearest Apple Store ($60 in gas) and sent it into Apple by mail. They were supposed to fix it or replace it, but they sent it back saying they "couldn't duplicate the issue."

This can't be normal. Are you really supposed to need to charge the new ones an extra 1-2 times a day with normal use? If not, how can I get this resolved before the warranty is up?
