Autofill Free Space Settings Do Not Exist
iTunes 12.6.2 (& had problem in earlier versions)
OSX 10.12.06: (& had problem in earlier versions)
iOS 11 (& had problem in earlier versions)

When I sync my iPhone I want iTunes to fill free space with songs, but I want to reserve a certain amount of free space on my phone for other uses. After searching the web, it is clear to me that most iTunes users have a setting window available to them which allows them to manage this space at the bottom of the Phone/Music pane which I do not have AND have never had.
It's making me insane! I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes. I have talked at length with apple customer support. I have resized windows, I have searched every available preference setting. This is completely mystifying!
When syncing my phone here is what is available to me and what I do:
1) click on phone icon to the right of dropdown menu (music, podcasts etc).
2) on Summary, I have toggled "Manually manage music" on and off and it makes no difference in offered settings; it does turn off "Sync Music" in the Music pane.
3) I click on Music (on my phone) and when I click "selected playlists, artists etc." and then "automatically fill free space with songs" I do not get any settings to let me control this free space. It just fills up the bar to the bottom and reserves anywhere from 5 to 13 GB
If you can help me solve this, you are a true rock star! Thank you.
The autofill option is the one given in the second image, shown as ticked, that reads automatically fill free space with songs. I don't think there are more options to choose. Below Playlists, albums, genres, and artists there may also be an area for individual tracks that have been added to the device using drag & drop.

ADDITIONAL: According to this article from Apple and other things I've read, I should have access to a settings box to further control the autofill options, but I don't. There is no way I can access the settings referred to and cited in link below. I know I did once, but have no idea when I lost access; it's been ages.
iTunes for Mac: Autofill settings
Well I confess this is a feature I've not had call to use before. I've just tried to set it up with iTunes for Windows 12.7 and like you cannot find the fine controls mentioned.
