still hearing deleted audio

I used the Marquee Tool to delete four measures in the middle of a multitrack project.  I deleted 10 tracks out of about 35.  On playback I can still hear one of the tracks even though it has been deleted and is not visible!  The problem track does not have multiple tacks.  I've closed the project and reopened and still have the same problem.  I can hit the mute button while the phantom track is sounding and mute it - again there is nothing visible.  I've used the Unhide All Tracks command to make sure I wasn't missing anything playing back - no luck.

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks!

Martin

I've tried a couple other things and still no solution.  I recorded over the section and I'm still hearing the audio!  I've triple checked to make sure it's the same track and it seems to be.  I see the blank, silent audio in the track but I still hear what I thought I deleted earlier.  I can hit the mute button on this track and the phantom audio goes away.

I also tried creating a new audio track and then dragging the audio from the problem track to it.  Same problem.

Thanks again if anyone has any input.

Martin

I don't know exactly what you mean from the way that you've described it, and there doesn't seem to be any takers - he, he.

There are quite a few ways that things like that can happen - don't assume that deleting a track on the Arrange window necessarily deletes it altogether, so go and have a look in the Mixer window and make sure you haven't got anything there that you thought you deleted and make sure nothing's muted or soloed and all that.

Audio tracks are automatically routed to a  logical way of using them as you create them, but all Audio tracks can be routed to different Audio channels, so, if you've changed anything like that, it could be a possibility.

Thanks for your reply chorleyman.  I didn't delete a track.  I deleted four measures in the middle of a track.

Also, I did check in the mix window with "All" selected to make sure nothing else was showing as playing back.

Thanks again.

Martin

OK, so

isn't the issue then?

Oops, sorry, my mistake.  I should have re-read before posting.

I did not delete any track.  I just used the Marquee tool to hightlight four measures across 10 tracks.  Then I hit the delete key on my Mac keyboard.  The audio visually disappeared.  But one of the tracks can still be heard.

Sorry for the confusion.

Martin

Hi,

Are you able to Locate the Troublesome Track...?

Oh yes!  :-)   The track meter shows levels and the mute button functions normally (I can press mute and the phantom audio disappears).  But no audio waveforms are showing in the Arrange window.

Martin

What exactly are you Muting...?

The track that's playing back but not showing audio waveforms.

Excellent...

Try This...

Delete the Track...

If you have Inserts on the Track you wish to Keep...

1) Copy the Track by Clicking on Settings...  Copy Channel Strip Setting

2) Create a New Audio Track...

3) Click on Settings on the New Audio Track... Paste Channel Strip Settings

You should now have a NEW CLEAN Audio Track without any Audio on it...

Does this Work...?

Yes, that works.  I didn't do exactly what you describe but here's what I did for a workaround.

Just before the phantom audio started playing back I automated a mute on that track.  Then I created a new, blank audio track.  Then I moved all the audio that was after the phantom audio (on the same track) to the newly created track.  Then I moved the same audio forward in time to the area where I had originally deleted audio on 10 tracks.

The reason I did this is because I was afraid if I just moved audio into the area where the phantom audio was playing I would have two things playing at the same time.  I guess I should have tried it but this has been somewhat of a nightmare project b/c I've had to swap files back and forth with another studio out of town.

Thanks again for your help.

Martin

Well I'm very Glad it's Working for you and that I was able to put you on the Right Track... So to Speak...

Cheers...

It's a workaround!  I'd still like to figure out exactly what's going on.

The clue is that it has come from another studio. My guess is that they were working with Universal Track Mode off, and you are defaulted to Universal Track Mode On, or vice versa (preferences/audio). Turning UTM off allows you to gang adjacent tracks to deal with dual mono tracks as if they are stereo. If they are then played back with UTM on, there can be strange results such as you have described
