Mail "Add Account" Error

Currently using Sierra.

Needed to change password for a BT Internet account in Mail; ok on iPad and iPhone, but wouldn't let me save on MacBook Pro. In the past, I have simply deleted account, then added as a new account - no problem. Not this time - every time I try I get the message "This account already exists".

I found a similar post, related to El Capitan, which suggested editing in SMTP Server list; done this, still not sorted.

A bit frustrating that this problem seems to recur, with no obvious solution.

Any ideas?
