cannot remember admin user name: single user ma...

cannot unlock computer.  2012 macbook air updated w El Capitain.  normal password entry after powering up results in blue colored background and display that requests "user name" as well as password.  can't remember it.  single user, personal computer.  tried the "command r" to utilities to terminal.  reset password menu came up, but no functionalities would permit data entry. i couldn't answer the question "which VOLUME is this username" in any event.  no idea what that even means.
