Why is my MacBook Pro fan SO LOUD

Hi.

I have a MacBook Pro 10.1 (it costs a fortune).. But both the fans is running 6000rpm+ at normal SIMPLE webbrowsing.. it sounds like a small jet i taking of..

Why is that??

this is my hardware specs:

Modelname:          MacBook Pro

  Model-id:          MacBookPro10,1

  Processorname:          Intel Core i7

  Processorspeed:          2,3 GHz

  processorer:          1

  Cores:          4

  L2-buffer (pr. Core):          256 KB

  L3-buffer:          6 MB

  Hukommelse:          8 GB

  Boot ROM-version:          MBP101.00EE.B02

  SMC-version (system):          2.3f35

I could accept this noice if I ran a high usage program like Photoshop or similar..

Please help..

Does it make noise when you set it on a desk, or are you using it on your lap?

Reset SMC.     https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

Choose the method for:

"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".

Runawy applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performances and

increase heat and fan activity

Activity monitor

https://support.apple.com/kb/TS1473

It does not matter where i place my MBP.. on a cold desk, my lap etc.. The fan still runs like a jet..

If domonic23's advice does not help, do the following:

Run an Apple Hardware Test:

https://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509

Open Activity Monitor and set it to show ALL PROCESSES and set %CPU to display values from high to low.  Post an Image of Activity Monitor and report the AHT results.

Ciao.

I did reset my SMC, correctly - but it had no impact on my fan noise.

I am using iStat Pro to minitor my MBP, and the fans just "exploads" to 5000+ rpm when my cpu usage goes over 4-5%..

I ran a hardware test a coupple of weeks ago, no hardware issue there.. so I'll bettter run by my local apple "store" and try get it "reparied" - even though I don't have a clue what is wrong..

Thanks for you advice guys..

A: is the fan making a buzzing sound or a scraping sound?

B: do you have pets or lots of dust or fuzz in the area of use of the Air?

C: are you covering the back of your Air where the vents are?

@PlotinusVeritas

A: nope - all smooth sound

B: Define LOTS of dust?? :-) but nope..

C: As answered above. it does not matter where i place my MBP, on a clean table, my lap, the floor - you name it, the fan has the same "pattern"...

If all ok there then yes, your Retina MBP needs a sick call at Apple store.

Heavy fan noise is often indicative of a fan rotor hub going bad

However yours is just running nonstop, from indications

More or less - yes.. the first 3-5min after i turn it on, my mbp is silent.. but then the fans starts to at least 3000rpm at 1% cpu usage... So I will go by my apple store tomorrow...

thanks

I'm glad you posted this question.  I have had the same problem for at least the last year.  I took my MacBook Pro to the Apple Store to be checked.  They said there was nothing wrong with it, and that they couldn't get the fan to make much noise.  As would be my luck, the sound has returned and remained.  Like you, I find that the fan is loud no matter where I place my laptop and no matter what applications I use or don't use.  I really want it fixed, because besides just generally being annoying, I record music and I always get the fan in the background of my tracks.

Fans should be idling at ~2000rpm.  Ramped up ~6000rpm under a  heavy load ( and yes sounds like a jet taking off.) not causal normal use.

Something is wrong if you can not get them down.

Hmm I will look into the links later today, thanks for posting. :-)

I had some pixel errors on my retina screen so I took my MBP to the official apple service center here in Denmark and asked them to look into the fan noise issue as well.. They just ran the service check from apple's servers and found nothing. (but they fixed my screen though)..

the fan noise is so bad, that I actually prefer to watch netflix etc. on my old asus laptop (there is NO fan noise what so ever)..

I expect to get a premium product when I pay 2500 euros for a laptop, not a miniature jet enclosed in a beautiful alu frame.........

I will let you know later tonight weither the links resolved my issues..

Just an small update..

Our apple service partner in Denmark does not recognize the fan issue as a problem.. they the "usual" apple hardware checker and did not find ANYTHING, so there were no fault..

What to do???? I've bought a 2.200 euro laptop that I won't use because of the noise.. I have started using my old Asus laptop for all "heavy" usage - INCLUDING watching Netflix.............. My **** MCP won't even stream netflix with out sounding like a midsize airconditioning unit.....

If ANYBODY has any good advice, please let me know :-(

Same thing....reset SMC - nothing ...hardware test nothing ...Fan on MAX with 10% of 1 CPU!

The question now is whether the CPU is hot or the fan is on unecessarily.

I will search for a tempature app.
