encrypted backups with time machine, time capsu...

Tech specs: Time Capsule (4th generation), 10.9.5, external drive (seagate).

Problem: I encrypted the backups to my Time Capsule (via Time Machine) and don't quite remember the password. Currently this is my only backup, but it's not really a backup if I can't remember the password. I want two functional backups, one on the Time Capsule and another on the external drive.

- Is there a way to test my password guesses for the Time Capsule encryption?

- If I can't figure out the password, then I guess I should wipe the TC and start from scratch. Or is there another good solution (so that I don't lose the archive)?

- I opened the TC sparsebundle in Finder to see the dated backup folders. These don't seem to be encrypted when I copy them elsewhere. Can I copy individual dates across to an external drive to preserve snapshots of my backups, or will this fail because the links won't work?

- If I my external drive is encrypted, do I still need to encrypt the Time Machine backup?

- When I tried to create an encrypted backup on my external drive, it started backing up without asking me to set a new password. Is it using the same password as Time Capsule? This is the one I can't remember. Is there a way to set a different password?

- Bonus question: If another external drive is encrypted, can Time Machine back it up?

Sorry for the long list. I have searched for answers but am still stuck.
