iMac will not reinstall macOS

I have an old, 2008 iMac. I just wiped the hard drive clean, 7 passes. Disc Utility then offers the option to reinstall the OS, which I selected. I got a window to "Install macOS Sierra, click continue," which I did. I then get a drop-down message: "To download and restore macOS, your computer's eligibility will be verified with Apple." I click "Continue." The drop-down menu disappears, and nothing happens; it will not advance to the next step. How can I get it to proceed?

Hello Schwaben10,

I would try reinstalling macOS without using the Recovery partition by making a USB flash drive installer. To do this, you'll need:

- A Mac (not the one you are working on)

- DiskMaker X

- A Mac OS X installer file (whatever version you want to install, preferably Sierra)

Now that you have DiskMaker X installed, it is time to make your flash drive. Follow this guide here to do so. This guide is for El Capitan but it should work with other versions of Mac OS X.

Create Bootable El Capitan Install Drive with DiskMaker X for Mac | Other World Computing Blog

From there, boot to the flash drive and install macOS onto your iMac.

Hope I could help!

You cannot install Sierra on a 2008 iMac. Check "About This Mac" to see which year you have.
