Lost user account

I'm giving my old MacBook Air to my daughter and was in the process of changing the user name in System preferences when the Mac crashed. Upon rebooting, the old user name still appears at logon. When I enter the password, it tries to boot up, gets to about 75% (according to status bar) and then stops. The log in screen changes to what looks like a new user: asks for User Name and Pwd, but no variation of user name/pwd will work.

I've tried booting into recovery more and finding the user name in Terminal using ls /users/ but get told that no such file or directory exists.

I've re-installied the latest OS from recovery mode, the PWD is definitely correct (no shaking password box), so I'm at a bit of a loss. Any help appreciated
