OS 10.9 Finder sidebar suddenly does not displa...

OS 10.9 Finder sidebar suddenly does not display most items; only shows couple items I don't even want there.  Can change what shows in first finder window but sidebar not responding to "Preference" changes.  Screen shot is what it shows now. I downloaded a Yahoo widget and their widget player app today, could that cause this?

Perform a SMC reset and recheck your Finder> preferences >sidebar

SMC RESET

1. Shut down the computer.
2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
5. Press the power button to turn on the computer. 
   

Did SMC reset and PRAM as well for good measure. No help from either. Trying again to post screen shot of Finder as it looks now

When I look screen shot is there and it also is present in my original post...

what does it say there?

also force quit FINDER once and verify.

Im sure LINC has a snappy resolution for this specific dilemma Ive yet to think of.

How is that different from what you expect?

I did force quite finder--> no effect.

Finder uaed to list in "sidebar" each of the main folders in HD i.e Documents, Pictues, Downloads, Movies, Applications...(I get same window contents open if click on HD icon  as when clikc on Finder). Now none of that.

Just now went back into preferences and unchecked everything in sidebar section. If I check for it to just show HD then everuything does show up but several windows to the right and HD icon is all that shows in sidebar but only if I first then click on (in order across the open windows: Users then geoffreylevens1 (system name).

If recheck items they do NOT show up in sidebar.  See attached

Place the cursor over the FAVORITES line in the sidebar and click Show.

Line, you nailed it for me. Thank you so much. This is a ridiculous UX flaw if to say. It got me stumped for ages.
