Can I use a 27" mid

I inherited the iMac and, rather than buy a new graphics card, want to use it as a second monitor on my thunderbolt-equipped MacBook Pro. I've tried to connect the iMac and MBP with a thunderbolt cable, but Command F2 doesn't toggle the iMac into display mode. Am I doing something wrong?

I believe you need the graphics card in order to use TDM. You also need to use a proper Thunderbolt video cable such as used with your other display.

Thanks, theratter, that was what I feared. So I take it that a broken graphics card really renders this iMac true and royally worthless. Can't use it as a computer with the internal monitor. Can't use it as a computer with an external monitor. Nor can it be used as a standalone monitor. Anything it can be used for?

Any options for a repair, besides Apple's ridiculously expensive replacement?

If the GPU is truly dead then it can be replaced. Not sure for how much but a Google search should find the information you would need about replacing components. OWC should also have tutorials on disassembly. iFixIt.com also has tutorials and may even be a source for replacement parts. This is not a task to be taken lightly. It is a major undertaking requiring care. Note that if you do something like this yourself, then you will never again find support from Apple.

Thanks, Theratter. Unless I want to spend $700 for Apple to make the repair, there doesn't seem to be many reliable options out there. I guess this beautiful piece of technology is destined for the eRecycling yard. (I'm a huge fan of ifixit and credit them with getting me into DIY electronic repairs of all sorts. I'm a warranty-voider from a way back!)

I agree - its beautiful piece of junk because apple is too lazy to hook up some obsolete chips from amd to at least create some spares for people who paid handsomely for these machines...

and by that these disposable machines are not too enviromental.
