Apple watch 3 with no iphone

So saw the release of Apple Watch 3 yesterday-- very exciting!! Although it does beg the question-- what if I have no iPhone at all and I just used my Apple Watch 3 for everything?  With the new cell capability built in along with Wi-fi connectivity and faster processor, I can basically have an iPhone on my wrist albeit an older one from a tech spec standpoint.  Can the Apple Watch 3 do this? Do cell carriers have a plan for just the Apple Watch with no cell phone?  I would imagine that Apple would cripple this ability as otherwise it might affect phone sales, but maybe not? Thanks for any feedback.

It is not possible to set up and use Apple Watch (any model) without pairing it to an iPhone.

Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) requires an iPhone 6 or newer with iOS 11.

Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS) requires an iPhone 5s or newer with iOS 11.

Yea I figured Apple would do something like this as otherwise it would have the potential to cannibalize their iPhone sales.  However, if it is a fully functioning digital sim card with its own IMEI number, can connect to all cellular networks and all the cell carriers have to "jerry-rig" their phone number porting on their back end for both devices to have the same phone number that it could very easily stand on its own.  Maybe next year....
