13" MBP Mid 2012
A few months ago, my MBP started showing what I believe were artifacts and then promptly shutting down. Afterwards, attempting to turn on the laptop would result in various complications, such as beeping sounds (can't recall how many), or a normal start up. However, even if the laptop were to start up, artifacts would eventually show up and the computer would shut down again, especially when the device is moved. This cycle persisted until I tested the RAM slots. I was able to figure out that the bottom slot was causing the problem, and my laptop has been working fine ever since I've emptied the slot.
Is there any way to fix this problem, w/o replacing the entire motherboard?

Good testing/troubleshooting. Unfortunately, a RAM slot cannot be fixed/repaired as it is soldered to the logic board.
Your best option for a definitive answer to your query is an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.
Occasionally fiddling with the fasteners (screws) solves the problem, but that is NOT a guaranteed solution.
Ciao.

It's not too complicated, it's unorthodox, but it's a fix:
I acquired a MBP mid 2012. Sometimes it would turn on, sometimes it wouldn't start up and do some weird three beep thing. Apple said one of the ram slots was going bad and the only way to fix it was to get a new logic board or to run it off one stick of ram.
You can run it on one stick but regardless of it's size, you will always be operating in a slow, single channel mode vs a quicker, better performing, dual channel mode. This wasn't an option for me. I needed the speed. I got to tinkering and experimenting with the ram sticks, their position, seating, reseating, all sorts of things. I noticed what you noticed with the screen fritzing out when the thing was handled.
I figured out, that if I placed a "wedge" or shim in between the ram and the back battery housing wall, I could get the system to read both sticks. I would put the back on and all would be good... until the thing got moved from point a to point b or any kind of pressure got put on the back side of it (it's own weight was causing the problem sometimes) - the screen would fritz, the system would freeze, I would have to restart. If it was in sleep mode, it wouldn't wake up. I would restart and it would do the three beep thing again.
Next, I got it back to a working order, both stick wedged into position... no problem... Put the back case on and poof - it would start fritzing again and freeze up. So I would restart and start over, applying pressure to the back panel. I realized, when I applied any kind of pressure, the thing would fritz and freeze up. If the pressure was too great, I would get the three beeps and have to take back panel off and make some "adjustments". So while the back panel was off, I restarted, everything was fine... I got to pushing on the actual ram carriage... one side, nothing would happen, the other side, screen fritz and freeze. Shut it down and restarted with pressure on the sensitive size - three beeps. OK... must keep pressure off of the ram carriage, period.
I procured two, non conductive spacers that were thicker than the distance from the top of the board to the top of the ram carriage, thick enough to be held in place by the back panel when it is reattached, but not thick enough to warp the back panel or be visible to the naked eye. I used a thin diameter bamboo knitting needle cut in two pieces no longer than the width of the ram carriage. I laid one piece right on the logic board, parallel with the ram carriage and one perpendicular to the first, making sure they both lay flat against the board, not on any capacitors or diodes, etc. (For positioning reference - if the computer is upside down with back off, the battery is at the top left, farthest from me, the ram directly below that. From there, your spaces will form an F without the second small line.)
Without disturbing the spacers or the ram, carefully reattach the the back panel, flip her over, and turn on. Turned on without a problem. Started up quick. Stays on. At this point I've applied a significant amount of pressure to the back side of the computer all over the place and not a single problem... no screen fritzing out, no beeps. I take mine everywhere, EVERYWHERE, in and out from the cold to the warm, extreme cold to warm and back again... nothing. She works perfectly. Shut the lid and put it into sleep, open her up and system comes right up, no problem.
So, wedge your ram, isolate ram carriage from pressure of any kind, problem fixed
Hi, Do you have please pictures of that solution? I'm having the same problem
thanks
Its a design flaw in these models of Macbook Pro, I know of many with the same problem. Will they admit it.... I don't think so.
