How do I get Dolby Vision and HDR movies on my ...
I've read everything I could find on the topic on the web, and I still have a few questions.
- How can you download the Dolby Vision (DV) and HDR capable movies to your iPad Pro from the iTunes Store?
- How do you replace the existing versions of HD downloads with the DV and HDR versions?
- How do you know that you now have the new versions rather than the old versions?
- Since Apple has apparently claimed that all HD downloads will be upgradeable for free to the DV and HDR versions (where available), will this be some automatic process or do I have to manually delete all the older versions and replace them with newer downloads?
I know that you have to select films that display such badges in the store (and I know that the badges for 4k are irrelevant for the iPad) and I know that you have to check the box in Settings-TV-iTunes Videos to download HDR Videos. Assuming you've done all that, when you download a fresh movie from iTunes to your iPad how do you know that you've received the HDR version? I assume at that point it's automatic, but is there some indicator of success like a new or different DV or HDR badge? The reason I ask is because I already have lots of digital copies from iTunes on my iPad Pro, many of which already show these DV or HDR badges attached to the versions I downloaded long ago. I'm pretty sure these downloaded versions aren't already the revised versions, so the badges must simply be indicating which movies have such versions available going forward. I assume, for films that display the right badges, that I still have to delete the existing versions I have and replace them with new downloads. Will these newly downloaded versions display different badges as a way to differentiate that they ACTUALLY are the DV or HDR versions rather than that such versions are available? I experimented by downloading a new movie, a DV version, directly onto my iPad Pro and, while it shows the badges, these badges look the same as the ones attached to the movies that I know I haven't upgraded yet. So how do you tell them apart? And I think I read somewhere that Apple said that this replacement of older versions would not only be free but also somehow automatic. If that's the case, should I just wait until this process somehow happens in the background? As for the downloading process itself, I typically don't download films directly to my iPad but rather download them to my 2017 MacBook Pro and then sync them with all my I-devices. I get that the laptop can't show 4k or DV or HDR (and when you look at such movies on the iTunes store you don't see those badges on the laptop whereas you do seem them on the iPad Pro), but if I download such a film onto my laptop (which then displays the non-revised version) does the revised version somehow "pass through" to the iPad Pro? In other words, can I only get DV or HDR versions on my iPad by downloading directly to it or can I still use my laptop as a centralized point of organization? Or will I need to download two versions of each such movie going forward, one HDR one for my iPad and the non-HDR one for my laptop and iPhones? Thanks in advance for anyone brave enough to help!
