Unable to rename bluetooth device

I'm not sure if this is related to newly released macOS 10.12.4 but i re-added once of my Bluetooth devices after the upgrade and i'm unable to rename it via Bluetooth preference pane. The device is connecting and working properly, it's just the name that can't be set anymore. The rename action simply does not do anything.

 

I already tried

1) Re-adding device

2) Deleting the com.apple.Bluetooth.plist file, restarting and re-adding the device.

3) Resetting PRAM

 

Anyone else seeing this? Any ideas?

It sounds like you're having some trouble customizing the names of your devices in your System Preferences > Bluetooth screen. I'll do my best to assist with that.

When using the System Preferences screen for Bluetooth, I noticed that I was unable to rename certain devices until I had connected them via Bluetooth.
Is the device you're trying to rename currently connected?

Try connecting the device, and attempt to rename while the connection is active and then tell us what happens.

None of the devices (Philips Adapter AEA 2500/12, Bose Mini SoundLink) gets renamed even if renaming is done while they are in connected state.

When you rename the device, it may take few moments to change the label in your Bluetooth Preferences.

If it still won't accept renaming, let's try to isolate this issue by creating another user account on your Mac and testing connecting and renaming your Bluetooth device there.

Let us know if the behavior occurs still after trying these steps.

Labels don't seem to change even after 5mins. Tried adding a new device (my iPhone7) but shows the same behaviour. Created a new user and tried changing the device names within that user account but with the same results.

Tried observing the console for errors but only Bluetooth related entry i can find is the following

[UICollectionView] _animateRenamingUI renameField = Philips

Since this is reproducible on other devices i assume it's a bug. I'm fine with that and am looking forward to a possible fix in an upcoming update.

How can you mark this issue as solved? Just because you were able to reproduce the issue doesn't mean it is solved. I have the same issue on macOS Sierra 10.12.4, and on iOS 10 there is no option to rename.

I have the issue on 10.12.5

I run 10.12.5 and also have this issue.

I noticed I can change the name of my BT mouse, but not of the BT speaker I am using.

I'm having the same problem. MacBook Pro 15", software up to date, can't rename any devices.

I'm not happy with Apple's 'wait and see' answer on this.

2015 MBP 15" same issue, can't rename Magic Trackpad.

I have this issue on my new MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017).  What's odd is that I *can* rename BT devices on my old MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), even though both are running 10.12.6.

 

Oh, and please don't mark issues as solved when they are not!
