Resetting an "old" Time Capsule for "new" task
I’m currently having some trouble “re-setting up” my Time Capsule. I struggle with detailed explanations and I have a tendency to over-complicate solutions (a combination of age and neurology). Here’s the background:
Ever since I upgraded to a new MacBook Pro a couple of years ago, I’ve not had Time Machine running properly. I’ve had a Time Capsule for several years but, since the MBP upgrade, I ended up not using Time Capsule (i.e. I switched off Time Machine). This sounds flippant - but isn’t: I really can’t remember what the issue was. I know it was something to do with starting to use external hard drives to store a lot of my day-to-day material (because the MBP drive is only 250GB). The whole thing started to confuse me and (stupidly) it just became less stressful to avoid the problem.
I’m now wanting to bit the bullet and set the bloody thing up properly. However, I’m still struggling as I don’t know where to start.
Here’s the current situation:
The Time Capsule (2TB) has 929GB of memory left. It is connected to my network with my modem/router. The data in TC storage is “old” - from my point of view. I want to start afresh and use the TC as the backup for my current MBP, as it is now. I also want to add to the regular backup the two external hard drives which I currently use. I seem to recall this required me to link them to TC as “excluded” from the backup and then change the settings. It’s been a while - I may have this quite mixed up!
If anyone can give me some guidance how to go about this, I’d be really grateful.
The question is extremely clear so neurology is not too bad.
Factory reset your TC.
I recommend you do this whole thing.
Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Setup the TC again.
Then redo the setup from the computer you want to use for TM using Airport Utility.
1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 for basestation and TCwifi wireless name.
If the wireless is still a problem set wireless names like TC24ghz and set the 5ghz to different name.. eg.TC5ghz
2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
**3. If the TC is main router you can skip this point. This is only an issue when the TC is bridged.
Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC.
Ignore this point if you don't understand it .. post back if you have drop out issues.
4. Make sure IPv6 is set correctly in the computer. ie link-local only for ethernet and/or wireless depending on which you use. Auto is not good enough.
Now for your particular situation..
5. Delete the existing backups by wiping the disk of the TC.
In the airport utility go to the disk tab and erase the drive.. a quick erase will be fine and only take a couple of min.
You should now be ready to run backups from your computer.
To include the external drives plugged into the MBP.. simply go to the TM preferences and remove the disk from the Exclude. So your exclude page is empty.
Personally I would recommend a different route.. especially with Sierra TM has become problematic on Network Drives.. i.e. Time Capsule.
I use Carbon Copy Cloner which is just a lot more reliable.. and you can setup backup of the external drives to be separate from job of backing up the internal drive.. this makes life a lot easier in the case of recovery.. you have separate backups. Keep using TM for the internal drive.. as TM does have some advantages with the Mac migration system etc.
