Problem copying music to iPhone

Problem: Some of the music that I copy to my iPhone does not show up in the "Artists" list in the music library on my phone, although the songs and albums are definitely on my phone (I can search for them and they show up). This is easy to reproduce (see below).

Information to get started: I just upgraded my iPhone 7 plus to iOS 11. I did not see a similar issue I am about to describe in any previous versions of iOS. I always choose to manually manage music on my iPhone. I drag and drop music from either a local folder, or from a network share, into the Music list on my iPhone in iTunes. My iPhone is plugged directly into my laptop (MacBook Air with the latest iTunes and OS X) via lightning cable.

Here's how I can reproduce this behavior every time. I start with a completely empty library on my phone:

Step 1: I start copying some albums over via iTunes. When that is finished, I check my iPhone and I can see the artists of those albums show up in the Artists tab.

Step 2: I then copy some more albums over via iTunes. When that is finished, I again check my iPhone. The artists from the new albums I just copied over never show up in the Artists list. It doesn't matter which albums I choose at either step. The first batch of albums I copy over always show the artist in my iPhone. The second (or third, or fourth, etc.) batch of albums I copy, never have the artists show upon my iPhone. It's like the first copy operation somehow locks some internal index or something that stores the artists.
