When I try to update my FREE apps, they make me sign in and it takes me to payment methods, it's asking for my security code and even when it's right, they say it's wrong. Please help, since when did I have to pay to update my apps? Apple fix this !!!!
You must have a valid payment method in your iTunes account, even for free apps and free updates.
If the iTunes store says your information is wrong this means that the credit card or debit card associated with your account is being refused by the card issuer. First check the following:
- The card number is correct
- The name in iTunes is identical to the name on the card
- The address in iTunes matches the billing address of the card exactly
- The CCV code (3 digit code on the back of the card) matches
- The expiration date in iTunes is the same as the one on the card
- You have sufficient credit in the account
- The card is issued in the same country as the iTunes store you are using
If all of these are correct contact your card issuer. The "Payment Declined" message originates from the issuer; iTunes just passes the message from the issuer to you. There is nothing for Apple to fix; you need to fix it with your issuer. Also, Apple is not here, so there is no point in telling Apple anything in this user-to-user support forum.

Just how much is "sufficient" for a free app?
Apple requests a $1 hold on the account. If the issuer approves then the card is accepted by Apple. The $1 charge is never completed, so it will roll off your account after a couple of days.
Llol this is ********
"You must have a valid payment method in your iTunes account, even for free apps and free updates."
Sorry, not quite true. I'm a foreigner living in Taiwan, and although Apple are perfectly happy to accept my UK VISA card to buy hardware, the App Store on my iMac, iPhone or iPad will not accept the same card to buy software. It says I must have a local credit card.
So, I do not have "a valid payment method", and regularly download - and update - free apps.
NOr true. The same info works when I buy or purchase an app which is not free.
I have try to get a app I delete by mistake and its saying I have to put in my bank details but why when the app was free
Did you not read this entire thread?
You must have a valid payment method entered.
i don't know how much I am paying so I don't do it.....
This is soooooooooo stupid
You know, Apple, has a great product, but this looks and sounds like a "bait and switch", to me.
I stopped my PayPal account from paying Apple because I had turn off the automatic payment for a newspaper app because I just wanted to read one week of the publication. I don't know what happen, but to my surprise, I find that PayPal had pay more after the week was was done and I had a month subscription. Stopped the PayPal.
THat happen about a year ago and just now I'm getting this run-a-round. And to top it all off I'm told that poor Apple needs to have a dollar for...I don't know? Maybe goes into a slush fund. Please!

Same/similar question here. I do not agree that one must have correct payment method on file for a free app. I've been downloading free apps for months with no requests for my cc info. Now, suddenly, I'm required to provide payments for free apps? Why? Sounds like a security breach to me. Asking for a $1 hold is BS, IMO.
edit: found a fix/workaround. Click on the bottom option in the payment method screen that says None. It should allow you to download the free app.
What Apple, and their cohorts, are reluctant to answer is why they require your security code when you are trying to download a "free" app.
I Have checked with my credit card company and their advice is clear - only input your security code when actually purchasing goods and only when the price is made clear to you.
Apparently a lot of scams operate by offering a "free" service but then sneak a charge onto your card account after you validate the transaction by entering your credit card security code.
IF these "free" apps really were free, Apple would not need to "validate" the download !
The card company advice ? Do not give your security code away unless you Fully trust the supplier. I'm not sure I do.
