Ipod wont play on computer

My computer crashed without backup. I am now using my wife's laptop. When I connect my iPod to my wife's computer I can see all the songs but they are all grey; not accessible for anything. The computer is authorized. Home sharing is on. I can see the entire contents but they won't play. I have songs on my library that are not on the iPod and every time I connect it says it is syncing but nothing happens.
