Java 8 Update 131 issues on Sierra 10.12

Hello,

I have recently purchased a Macbook Air and have installed the latest version of Java, which is Java 8 Update 131 from Java's official website. Once the installation is completed and I try to login to my work portal which makes use of Java, I get the error message:

Unable to load resource:

https://www.java.com/ga/applet/verify/JavaDetection.jar

I have been reading a lot of articles and their official website but nothing seems to be helping. Can you please advise how I can get Java working on my system? Is there a way to install an older version of Java that will work? I am using iOS Sierra 10.12. Any help/advise will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Try ro enable java in your browser:

How do I enable Java in my web browser?

Hello,

Thanks for the response. I tried that but it hasn't helped. I have also noticed that if I navigate to the Apple icon on the top left and click on Preferences > Java and onto the security tab, there is an Exception Site List section which has some websites included (the ones I need JAVA for). When I click on "Edit Site List", I have not able to Add/Remove any of them as the Add and Remove buttons have been greyout out. Maybe if those were editable and clear the list, my applications will start working for those websites? I have done quite a bit of goog-ling but can't find how I can make the add/remove list editable. Any ideas?

Regards,

Abhishek

have you restarted your mac?

have you tried other browsers then safari ?

Hi,

Yes I have tried both but no luck. If this is to do with Site Exception List where I can't add/delete urls on my mac, I tried to find a solution which probably relates to deployment exception files, but on Java's website it only troubleshoots for Windows as per the link Why is the Add button on the Exception Site List grayed out?

Don't know how I can get this working for mac and eventually fix the JAVA issue overall.

Hi,

i have managed to fix the grey out issue by deleting the list from the deployment configuration but that doesn't seem to have fixed the issue. I think the main issue is when I go to Verify Java Version the version does not get verified and gives me an error, which I have attached. I guess if I can get this verified, my application will detect java correctly and work ok. Any advise will be much appreciated.

Don't know if this will help but you could try installing the Legacy version of Java…

Download Java for OS X 2015-001

Thank you @dialabrain, I could try this and see if it helps.

I visited this page earlier but I think the application doesn't like me using Java 6 or 7. I also tried uninstalling Java 8 Update 131 and installing Java 8 Update 77 and 121 but they both gave me the same error. Upon verification I was asked to update to the latest version but I clicked on "Skip" to continue verification using the older versions but it didn't help.

Abhishek

Welcome. Which browser are you using?

Safari. Tried Chrome as well but no luck.

Chrome no longer supports NPAPI plugins. Firefox is dropping support as well. I had to change the security settings to allow Safari to run the Java plugin.

Somethings you can try is boot into safe mode…

macOS Sierra: Start up in safe mode

Create a new user account and see if it works there. If it works in Safe Mode some third party app is blocking Java from running.

Thank you - I shall try that. Can I try this using my main account or I must create a new account?

Any account you haven't tried yet.

Hi @dialabrain

I tried verifying Java in safe mode and yes, it does work indeed - greatly appreciate your suggestion! However, it still does not work in normal mode, not sure what's going on there.

One issue which has come up after the safe mode bootup is that my track pad now doesn't work on the login screen so have to use an external usb mouse to login which works. With the trackpad, I can only move the cursor around but can't click so it doesn't bring up the enter password field for me to type anything. However, after logging in, the trackpad works fine. Could there be some setting(s) gone wrong in safe mode?

Many thanks,

Abhishek

FWIW, Safe mode temporarily blocks third-party startup items from loading. The fact that Java works in Safe Mode but not in Normal Mode indicates you have something installed blocking Java.

Please install and paste the results…

Safe Mode should have no affect to your TrackPad. Try resetting the SMC.
