how do i update my ipad to ios 11?

how do i update my ipad to ios 11? I tried iTunes and from the iPad itself but I am not having luck.

You don't state what model of iPad you have, but be aware that not all models can be updated to iOS 11. See below from iOS 11 - Apple for the models that can be updated:

  • 12.9-inch iPad Pro
    2nd generation
  • 12.9-inch iPad Pro
    1st generation
  • 10.5-inch iPad Pro
  • 9.7-inch iPad Pro
  • iPad Air 2
  • iPad Air
  • iPad
    5th generation
  • iPad mini 4
  • iPad mini 3
  • iPad mini 2

See the chart below to determine whether you can upgrade your device and to what you can upgrade. If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. You will have to connect your device to your computer and open iTunes to update.

     c. Resolving update problems

        1. iOS - Unable to update or restore

        2. iOS- Resolving update and restore alert messages

Before you upgrade to iOS 11.

Backup your iDevice to either (or both) iCloud or the latest iTunes on a computer.

iOS 11 is an all 64-bit OS.

That means any apps on your iPad that are still 32-bit apps that haven't been updated to the new 64-bit code will no longer work after you have upgraded to iOS 11.

You can find out which apps on your iPad are still 32-bit ones by going into

Settings, About, Applications and tap on the disclosure arrow after where is states how many applications are installed on your iDevice

The application list that follows will be a list that shows all of the remaining apps on your iPad that are still 32-bit apps and have not had any recent updates.

So, if there are any apps in that list that you use a lot and that have data stored to them that is important to you, you need to find a way to copy that data to either a computer or use an offsite, cloud data storage service, like Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, Amazon Cloud Drive, etc. OR email this data to yourself, if need be, to save this info as there will be no way to retrieve it later if no new 64 bit coded update ever surfaces from the app developers.

Then, the BEST way to upgrade/update an iDevice is to do the upgrade with your iPad connected to a computer running the latest iTunes version, 12.7.

Good Luck to You!
