MacBook Pro: i5 vs i7?

Hi, I'm interested in purchasing the 13 in MacBook Pro but am wondering if it is necessary to upgrade to an i7 processor. I mainly used computer to surf the internet, email, complete schoolwork, store pictures, and play some basic games, the most "heavy" of which would probably be The Sims.

If I don't need the i7 I could buy through Best Buy and put it on my card, otherwise I think I'd have to order custom through Apple.

Thoughts?

Hi Poppykenna:

For what you are using your computer for it doesn't sound like you need the i7, the i5 will do nicely.

You may want to consider upgrading the SSD or possibly the RAM as they are both soldered onto the motherboard and you will be unable to upgrade either later.

Hope this helps,

Kim

Hi,

You can look at Geekbench scores if you want, but having seen them already, I can tell you that scores are very little higher for the i7 than the i5, meaning there is no reason to spend the extra money on the i7. As has already been stated, do spend the money on 16GBs of RAM and at least 256GBs of storage (512 would be even better).

You may consider the i7 in the long run as a more powerful computer tend to be usable far longer as technology becomes more powerful but more demanding. Also consider an Apple Care extended warranty. Usually when some asks if I want to pay for an extended warranty I raise my eyebrows and give them a contemptible look, but in the years I have spent ordering and deploying dozens of Apple laptops the handful of times I had Apple Care saved $1000's in repairs.

Now keep in mind there are a number of dual core, not quad core i7's that don't fare much better than i5's. These are generally in laptops and were designed for battery saving, not horsepower, but a quad core i7 even at a lower considerably lower clock speed to an i5 can blow the doors off the i5 when software is optimized for multi-thread, and most software is these days.

The MacBooks have no option for a quad i7

The 13" MacBook Pros do not have an option for a quad core i7, but the 15" do on custom builds.

All 15" MBPs come with a quad core i7; it is not possible to buy one without it.

I stand corrected, thanks for the heads up.
