Mac Mail in Yosemite on iMac vs. iCloud

Late 2009 21.5-inch iMac. Mac Mail Inbox has over 3,000 emails, many more stored on folders. Obviously, takes forever to load the Inbox so I just do a search to confine the display to "today" or "this week." But eventually, every time I clicked on an email (even just moving between them without reading), I got the spinning beach ball, lasting anywhere from one second to eight or more seconds. Repaired disk permissions, other utility stuff. No change.

I added some RAM and rebooted, worked fine again, but it lasted a few weeks at best. Can't sort/delete the mailboxes and emails now because it takes so long--just clicking between mailboxes or one email gives me the SBBoD. So I just opened an iCloud account and wondered the following:

1) If I move the current Inbox or its contents from "On my Mac" to the iCloud mail box, will all the emails then move to said cloud and off my machine? Will I no longer get the beach ball?

2) When I click only on the iCloud mailbox(es) in Mac Mail, does that mean I'm only reading "virtual" copies that are in the cloud and not physically downloaded to my machine anymore? If not, how do I do that so my mail is only web-based and not downloaded?

3) Would it help if I switched to Sierra instead?

Any suggestions/fixes are welcome--and please talk to me like you would your parents--I'm as tech-savvy as a grayed ape.

Thanks!
