what is wrong with my iPod touch display

DISCLAIMER: If you are going to answer this question, DO NOT say to bring the iPod into an Apple Store or to visit a technician. I would like to know what the cause of this problem is so I can find a solution. I do not think $120 is a fair price for device repair this simple, so I want to know the problem first. Thank you.

So, my iPod Touch could turn on, and after about 10 minutes, the screen would start to go dim, grey lines would appear like an old CRT, and it wont show anything on the screen. Any ideas of the possible cause for this?
