Problem setting up new Time Capsule

Hi,

have ve just bought a new Time Capsule for my partners apt and I am having problems. The apartment is connected to fiber optic, so I need to use the ISPs unit as a gateway. I have turned off the units wifi and DHCP. When I try to set the TC up as DHCP and NAT I get the err - invalid value the dhcp range you have entered conflicts with the wan IP address.

All works fine when I set up the TC just as DHCP, but I bel the TC firewall only works in DHCP and NAT mode and it's the TC firewall that made me get it. Can someone help?

If you have deactivated the DHCP service on the fibre "gateway", then what IP address appears at the WAN port of the Time Capsule?

If it is the 192.168.1.10 IP address that you mention in your post, then you have not disabled the DHCP service on the "gateway", despite what you might think.

When you have disabled the DHCP service on the "gateway", it will be acting as a "modem", and as such, it will be providing a Public IP address to the Time Capsule.  A Public IP address cannot start with 192.x, 10.x, or 72.x.  All of these 192.x, 10.x, or 72.x addresses are known as Private IP addresses, which are IP addresses that are provided to clients on a local network by the network router.

If it is not possible to provide a Public IP address to the Time Capsule WAN port.....and you still want the Time Capsule to operate as a DHCP and NAT router, then you will need to use a different IP address range on the Time Capsule to avoid IP address conflicts. Something like the default 10.0.1.x range would be good.

Unfortunately though, if you do this, you will have what is known as a Double NAT error on the Time Capsule network, since both the "gateway" and Time Capsule will both be providing NAT service.  That Double NAT error can range from being insignificant to serious as far as how it might affect the Time Capsule network.  No way to really know what the effect will be until you try things out.
