What do i need after installing a new hard disk?

It sounds like my hard disk is on its way out.  I'm about to run the diagnostics to check.

I'd like to know what I will need to restart my MacBook after I've (if I need to) replaced my hard disk such as start up disk (?), how do I get OS installed etc, etc.

I'm backing stuff up onto cloud storage (documents etc etc).

Nice and simple instructions will be greatly appreciated

Restart with the Option, Command, and R keys held down, use the Disk Utility to reformat the new drive if needed, and then run the installer.
