how do i download macOS Sierra

I can only go back to 10.9 so prior to that you may be correct.

If you are running at least Lion (I think) and your mac is capable of running Sierra, then you can download from the App Store. Click on Featured, and you should immediately see "macOS Sierra" on the right, under "Quick Links".

Or click the search box in the top right and type Sierra.

It will look similar to the picture below - except it may say "Install" if you don't have Sierra already. But you can just download. If you don't proceed with the installation once it is downloaded, the installer will be in your Applications folder, called "Install macOS Sierra".

Note: if you do install, the installer will delete itself when it is finished. So if you want to install AND keep the installer, copy it somewhere else *before* you install.

i have a macbook air (mid 2013's). i am in the app store. it says no updates are available. my current version is 10.10.5 OS X Yosimite. i have backed up my whole mac.

My point was that if the OP has never installed a version of Sierra on his mac, he won't find it under updates.

That is true even if he is running El Capitan.

An "upgrade" (as in 10.11->10.12) always requires a "purchase". That is different from an "update" (as in 10.12.1->10.12.2).
