Preview error

I am getting the attached error message when I try to do a quick preview of images.  This doesn't happen every time but it does happen quite often, especially after saving images from an SD card to a folder.

I normally open the SD card folder and drag images to my pictures folder (as this is the quickest and safest method) and then hit the space bar to view selected images.

Usually leaving the saved image alone for a minute or two cures it and it opens normally.

I have also noticed that Preview also crashes when some documents are opened by using the space bar; Word .docx in particular.  It usually happens on a long document (more than say 2 pages) when I start to scroll down.

When you QuickLook multiple images, it is not using Preview to image them, until you explicity click on that Open with Preview button. Can you QuickLook that specific IMG_3890.JPG image without errors?

Providing that you have enough RAM, you can tell Preview itself to open a folder of images, or from the Preview Open panel, multiple selected images. Before you do this, change Preview Preferences : General to Open all files in one window. Once the images have loaded, select View menu : Contact Sheet (option+command+6).

When you are done, select all of the thumbnail images, and then from the File menu, close all selected images.

I always thought the "Quick view" (using the space bar) was a version of Preview without the frills for taking a quick view.  From what I understand from your response it is a separate piece of software.

The fault only appears when using Quick View, not Preview (so my headline is wrong).  As it seems to happen randomly I can find no obvious pattern to what triggers it.  If I select the file mentioned now and hit the space bar no problem, it opens properly.  At first I thought perhaps it was selecting multiple images that did it - but no that works.

I tend to drag (or copy/paste) a whole outing of images in one go, and then select and view them to check the transfer.  That's usually when it happens.

My iMac is absolutely up to date (v10.12.6) and I have 4Mb on board.
