Where is the mic located on a 27 inch slim iMac?

I tried snapping my fingers in front of the screen, all around the bezel, and behind the case while watching the level meter in the Sound panel. It seems that no matter where I hold my hand the level is the same. I'm sure they didn't put multiple mics in there, probably just a very sensitive omni. But where?

It's the tiny pin-hole, dead centre next to the camera.

Thanks for the info. Its so tiny it looked like a slight imperfection in the top edge of the case. Theres a similar mark on the back about an inch below the top edge, but it doesn't seem to be another microphone.

I'm wondering if theres a way to permanently disable this mic - it keeps turning itself back on.

This is what I want to know, how to disable it permanently. Did you figure it out?

Your problem, hardware or software, may not be exactly the same as that of the original poster of this older thread, and it can be very confusing for everybody if we try to answer more than one question in each thread, which can also result in you applying the wrong advice to your particular problem.

In order for us to give your problem our proper attention to try to solve it, would you kindly start your own thread, describing the trouble you are having in the fullest detail, including completing your details to show what Mac or iDevice you are using, what operating system, and what version of the application in question. Please remember to post in the forum relevant to your hardware or version of OS X. A full list of all the support forums is here:

My understanding is that, based on some minor details discussed in hands on reviews after the 2013 iMacs came out, is that apple mico-sized the microphone holes on the front and back. They are so small you cannot feel them and you can barely visually perceive them. I believe this having the following benefits:

  • Improves uniformity in omnidirectional sensitivity and tonal perception.
  • Prevents noise being generated when air moves across the microphone opening
  • Keeps dust and moisture out of the case.

Apple did put two microphones in the mac, one in front and one in back to improve noise cancellation for features such as face time.

It never stops amazing me how much tech and features apple puts into their products that they rarely ever tout or put in online specs and promotional language. once apple introduces a feature such as this, they may mention in in some side note somewhere shortly after release, and then they rarely ever mention in publicly again.

My realization of this started many years ago, all they way back when apple designed laptops to sense when they are falling in order to park the hard drive head and protect it. Apple mentioned that feature during that generation of laptops, has continued to include improved versions of this tech in one form another, and then never talked about it again in any future iteration.  apple hates competing on long lists of specs except when it comes to ports and interfaces, even then they leave out as much detail as they can get away with.

sorry for the long post.

Fold a piece of paper 2-3 times and tape it securely over the hole and some larger margin. Been doing it for years. You can yell toward the hole safely.
