IMac locked itself. Message appears saying to contact Apple.pass@*** to get instruction. Is this a scam and how to fix it

Yes, it is a scam. Do not respond. It may be due to ransomware. Typically, they will ask for a fee to unlock but chances are they will just take the money and do nothing for you. Bring your Mac to any Apple Store with proof of purchase.
