the invitation could not be accepted "a server ...

I have an invite to a shared photo folder that I am trying to accept on my Mac Pro. I have access to this shared folder on my phone and iPad, but when I try to join on my Mac I get this pop-up

"the invitation could not be accepted. 'a server with the specified hostname could not be found.'"

any thoughts on how to fix this issue? thanks
