Cannot set up iCloud email addy

Hi,

I set up my apple ID using a Gmail account. I set up iCloud, no problem.

But now I would like to turn ON iCloud email. But when I try and turn on it asks me to create an iCloud addy, but then says there is a problem and to 'try later.'

After many 'laters' I chatted to Apple Support who said it was due to my Gmail addy and sent me info on aliases.

I am in a bind. I can't use iCloud email because I cant get an addy.

Can anyone advise please??
