Blue stripes and dots

My late 2009 iMac will not boot (except in safe mode).  It shows vertical blue stripes during part of the boot the freezes with green dots and the apple logo.  In safe mode the stripes are still present and everything is super slow, meaning I can watch the screen refresh as it loads over a 10 second period.  I have verified drive space, reset several items, and veèified my 8 gb memory.  Any assistance would be great.

Classic symptoms of a failed GPU. Sorry for the bad news but it looks like its time to replace it.
