Sierra Compatible with MacPro Early 2009

My MacPro Desktop, Early 2009 Build 4.1 with Intel 2.66 4 Core Processor is currently running the latest version of El Capitan.  Can I install the Sierra release, and if NOT, why not?

Thank you for your help.

The oldest version of the Mac Pro which can run Sierra is mid 2010.

It appears the 2009 can run Sierra if you upgrade the firmware of the 4.1 to that of a 5.1.

I did the firmware upgrade to my early 2009 to 5.1 following the excellent advice and the script I found from the Mac Pro folks on MacRumors, to prepare it for a 6 core processor upgrade.

Since I suffered so much speed loss from the upgrade from Yosemite to El Capitan, I'd like to try Sierra, but worried the same might be amplified. Any users here had experience in my situation?

Kurt - did you ever go ahead with the upgrade to Sierra with your MacPro? I'm in the same boat now. Just curious whether it helped your speed or slowed your machine down?
