Apple Watch Series 3 Cellular Provider

Hello All,

I currently reside in Toronto, and just seen the release of the Apple Watch Series 3. I have become increasingly interested in purchasing one, especially now with the cellular data and phone pairing feature available with the watch. However, my phone carrier (Fido) is not listed in the available cellular providers for the Series 3 watch. What are my options? Do I wait to see if Fido will hopefully provide a cellular plan for the Series 3 in the future? I really don't want to switch phone carriers as I have been with them for over 10 years. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi

Apple Watch (GPS + Cellular) is not locked to any specific carrier and has a built-in eSIM that copies information from the iPhone's SIM card.

The built-in cellular features require a carrier plan in your country of use that specifically includes support for Apple Watch (including the carrier activating the device on the plan):

I suggest that you contact your carrier to ask about their plans for offering service plans for iPhone that include support for Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular).

If you do not wish to sign up with a supported carrier for now, then you cannot currently use the built-in cellular feature.

However, Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) can still be paired, set up and used for other features whilst skipping the steps to activate cellular. The cellular feature can then be enabled later, if and when you are using a compatible service plan on your iPhone.

According to this support document, Apple Watch - Carriers - Apple, you are correct it isn't listed. There will be more carriers in more areas later as they work to support the Apple Watch. My recommendation would be to wait and contact your provider to see what they have to say about supporting the watch. As indicated by the support document, it requires an additional plan from your provider, so that could be the  holdup for your current provider. I suspect once the popularity of the device is demonstrated, more carriers will come on board.

If you don't want to switch carriers, then yes, your only option is to wait and see if Fido will support it in the future.

The watch must be using the same carrier as the paired iPhone.

Your best bet is to contact Fido and request they support the watch.
