Note to Mac Support: Bug in Mac shutdown

Mac mini (Late 2014)

During the past week I've had my Mac shut down by itself when I've walked away for an hour or more.  I tried to troubleshoot this problem by doing a Safe Boot, resetting the SMC,  resetting the NVRAM, etc.  Nothing worked.

Found the problem, which appears to be a bug, in System Preferences.

First, I set the Screen Saver option to start "Never".  That by itself did not solve the problem.

Next, under Energy Saver, I set the slider for "Turn display off after" to "Never".  Now, I recall in earlier versions of MacOS there was an additional slider for adjusting the time before the Mac would go into sleep mode.  That slider does not appear in the current version of MacOS.  So, I unchecked the box that says "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off".  When I made these changes in Energy Saver the Mac no longer shut down when I walked away for an hour or more.

Just to check if this was indeed the problem, I checked the box "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" and came back an hour later.  Indeed, the computer had shut down instead of going into sleep mode.

This appears to be a bug in the System Preferences that I hope Apple will be able to correct in an update soon.
