icloud locked iphone6

I'm trying to erase an older iPhone 6 Plus, which is running iOS 10.3.3.  I have access to the App Store etc. via my Apple ID, however when I try to erase the phone and log out of the iCloud I receive a prompt for my Apple ID, which is then rejected.  Does anybody know why this is happening and how I can circumvent this?
