How do I delete recents from iMessage on Macbook?

When I start typing someone to send an iMessage to on my Macbook, contacts who have long been deleted pop up as a suggestion. How do I turn this off or clear my recents? I have no conversations and no contacts.

Hey racheleliz,

Thanks for asking in the Apple Communities. To remove addresses from your previous recipient list in the chat app Messages, you will need to remove them from the Mac Mail app.

Mail (El Capitan): Delete old email addresses

Cheers.

Thank you, but I am referring to old phone numbers, not old email addresses. Anyway to do that?

Hello racheleliz,

Thanks for clarifying your question here in the Apple Communities. For phone numbers, delete any conversations you have with that number you no longer wish to see in the Messages app, and then it shouldn't come up anymore. The only exception to this would be if that number is in the Contacts app on the Mac, or synced contacts from your Messages accounts. This article talks about internet accounts in Messages. Messages (El Capitan): Add Internet accounts

Thanks again.

I have this same exact question too and the answer provide no help what so ever. I have recent contacts (some have been deleted for over a year) and they are coming up only when I use iMessage on my Macbook. When I use iMessage on my iPhone they do not pop up at all. This has to be the most frustrating thing ever and makes me not want to use iMessage on my Macbook at all. The suggestion at the bottom says you delete them from contacts and they wont show up anymore couldn't be more wrong. THEY ARE DELETED FROM MY CONTACTS and they still show up on my iMessage app. I have texted people on my macbook multiple times that I DO NOT WANT TO TEXT. I am a coach and I had a lot of old coaches listed as coach... then their names. Well some have similar names that I have deleted and no longer talk to and when i type in coach their names still appear and I have accidentally clicked on them. Some of them had the same name and the contact looked the same with different numbers I realize that this was a bad move by me but I didn't think I could have this problem. But then I started texting someone who I thought was someone else and it has be SO CONFUSING. I hate this about apple, and then there is no way to fix the the problem.

Bottom line I have old DELETED contacts (YES THEY ARE DELETED OFF MY CONTACTS) showing up on my Macbook iMessage when I start typing their name. And yes I have gone on my iPhone and hit the i and removed these contacts ages ago and they no longer show up on recents on the iPhone. I have no clue on what to do, doubt I'll get help here though.

I echo everything bowserhouse said and this issue is EXTREMELY ANNOYING!!!! If I remember correctly, you USED to be able to delete recents from imessages on Mac as well, just like you can on iphone but it seems that is no longer possible.

This worked for me (after a long struggle) - I blocked and then deleted the contact, but it kept popping up saying found in apps. So I went to my Settings> Contacts> turn off the "Contacts Found in Apps," option I opened iMessage again and created a new message. I typed the contact's name and they popped up again with a little "i" next to their name, I tapped on the i and now I had the option to "Remove from recents." And the contact is completely gone now!

I know how to do this on the iPhone, but I don't understand the process you went through to do it on a Mac, which is the issue most users were having. Would you mind explaining in more detail? Thanks!

yes, how to fix this on the mac, the iphone method works fine for the phone but not for the mac
