macbook pro makes repeating "error" alert sound

Hi, my MacBook Pro randomly began making a constantly repeating error sound, like when you press a wrong key or command on your computer. This sound just started when i booted up my MacBook Pro this morning, and is only not audible when I mute the computer (logically). I tried to see if any keys of my keyboard were stuck, and that doesn't seem to be the case. Also, after first noticing the problem, I proceeded to update the OS to 10.9.2 (from 10.9 or 10.9.1, don't exactly remember) and after the whole reboot, the problem still persists. Any thoughts on what the problem could be and how I could fix it? Thanks

See if this helps.

I appreciate the reponse. Just noticed that i wasn't clear in my initial post:

I just rebooted my computer, and no actual weird sound was made during the bootup. This error-like sounds, which repeats once every 4 seconds, starts AFTER the login, once my desktop is fully loaded.

I don't have an answer, but the exact same thing happened to me ... I rebooted, thinking that this would somehow save the day, the sound started again ... but then stopped ... I'd really like to know what's going on

Hi,

My macpro has been doing exactly the same thing since this morning.

I tried to re-install Maverick but it didn't change anything.

Hello, I just started having the same problem as well. It could possibly be an app that you have open in the taskbar. I had "FreeMemory" running but when I closed it, the beeps stopped.

you nailed it! Can't understand why it stopped on it's own yesterday though, since I always have the program running. This has to be an update conflict between FreeMemory and the latest security patch on Mavericks.

YES THIS WORKED! Before I even closed FreeMemory, I had muted all user interface sounds/volume change feedback, but this took about 2 days to actually come into effect...Once it did go into effect I didn't hear the repetitive sound anymore.

HOWEVER, I un-muted all the system sounds (they're working fine) and quit FreeMemory and the sound is gone!

Thanks for all the help

Bravo, that did the trick for me as well!

Thanks macaddict!  I quit the Free Memory App and the robotic sound is gone!!!!!  Job well done!!

My mac mini has also started randomly making a constantly repeating error sound, like when I press a wrong key or command on my computer.

It also happens when I start up, and at random intervals. At startup, the sound is a different one, as if someone is hitting a wooden box or something. After startup, when it happens again, it is the regular error sound: "dingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdi ngdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdingdi ng..." and it repeats indefinitely until I press command-period a few times.

The sound stops when I press command-period, but it happens again after a while at random intervals. While it happens, the computer is inoperable, that is, I cannot select any icon in the Finder or perform any command, until it stops.

I also noticed that restarting from a different startup disk , by holding down the option key to select a disk now is also impossible. The only way to do so now, is to invoke Control Panel>Startup Disk.

I have zapped the PRAM and reset the SMC (I think) but the problem persists. I say "I think" because holding down command-option-p-r does not result in 2 startup sounds, just one, and the system boots with the recovery disk.

I have never been stumped by a mac problem in more than 20 years, until now.
