audiobook playlists will not go away

I routinely listen to books by ripping the CDs, converting file type to audiobook, and then creating a smart playlist of the tracks. When I am done with a book, I will delete the playlist in itunes and all the files on my computer. But when I go to select audiobooks to sync with my phone, the audiobook title still exists in the list of available books. I now have many "ghost" playlists which I must scroll past to find new books to sync. How do I erase the playlists which I have already erased?
