El Capitan Will Not Load
I have an early-2009 iMac that has been working wonderfully for years, and has been working just fine running El Capitan. In fact, the only issue I have had is with Time Machine, but my issues with that have less to do with the operating system and more to do with my refusal to buy a 4 TB or larger external drive for Time Machine to write to.
Last week during Hurricane Irma my power was knocked out and so I unplugged my iMac and other electronics to avoid electrical surges and other issues that may come up during line repair and restoration. After 5 days we finally got power back, so I plugged all of my electronics back in.
When I turned on my iMac it started to load, although much slower than normal. When the status bar was approximately 75% full, the status bar flashed white, disappeared, and then came back up again but with a round icon spinning on the screen in front of it. As I let the iMac continue to run the screen started turning off (going black) and back on again. After repeatedly restarting the computer I then tried:
1. Rebooting the iMac into safe mode, but the same issues occurred and safe mode would never load.
2. I cleared the memory, rebooted (both regular and safe mode) and still it would not load.
3. I restarted the computer in Recovery Mode and used Disk Utility to see if it there were any issues with the boot drive that needed to be repaired, but Disk Utility reported no bad sectors or other disk errors.
I thought I was having a hardware issue, but much to my surprise the 100 GB partition running Windows 7 Professional (64 bit) booted perfectly and works just fine (although I did have 2 years worth updates to run).
So at this point the only option I think I have is to reinstall the operating system. I am loathe to do this, so are there any other suggestions on getting my iMac to boot up?
If there are no better options and I do have to reinstall El Capitan, where can I find a copy to install since I do not have a backup disk and Time Machine has not been run in over 6 months?
