I have an iPad mini, only two years old. My iPad still has the ridiculous 9.3.5 iOS update and it makes me frustrated, annoyed, and makes me feel left out because I can't THE IOS 10 UPDATE. This is unfair. How can I possibly get the update?!?!
You can't, unless you own one of these.
- Pad Pro 12.9-inch
- iPad Pro 9.7-inch
- iPad Air 2
- iPad Air
- iPad 5th generation
- iPad 4th generation
- iPad mini 4
- iPad mini 3
- iPad mini 2

You don't.
You may have had your 1st gen iPad Mini for two years, but is a 5-6 year old iDevice.
The iPad 2, 3 and 1st generation iPad Mini are all ineligible and excluded from upgrading to iOS 10.
They all share similar hardware architectures and a less powerful 1.0 Ghz CPU that Apple has deemed insufficiently powerful enough to even run the basic, barebones features of iOS 10.
Why would you want to upgrade, anyways?
Since iOS 8, older iPad models such as the iPad 2, 3, 4 and the original iPad Mini have only been getting the most basic of iOS features.
Older iPad users get none of the newest and coolest cutting edge features that newer model iDevices, with better hardware specs, can handle with more aplomb.
FYI,
Just because your 1st gen iPad Mini is no longer able to upgrade to the latest iOS doesn't mean your 1st gen iPad Mini is suddenly useless.
So, your options are really keep using your 1st gen iPad Mini or purchase a new iPad if you feel you need or want to.
Your current 1st gen iPad Mini will still work and continue to receive app updates until sometime this Fall 2017, when, with the introduction of iOS 11, ALL support for older 32 bit iDevices and any iOS 32 bit apps will come to a final end.
Your 1st gen iPad Mini will still work and function as it always has, but will no longer receive any more app updates after the Fall of 2017.
The 1st gen iPad Mini has had 4-5 years of iOS upgrades/updates.
The final app updates your 1st gen iPad Mini will receive will be its last!
This is why Apple introduced the new, lower cost 2017 iPad 5 model, in April
Apple is trying to get older iPad 2, 3, 4 and 1st gen Mini iPad users to upgrade to more modern iPad hardware in anticipation of iOS 11, which will render all older 32 bit iDevices obsolete.
Good Luck to You!
Here is the problem... I have an iPad 3rd gen that is still in mint condition and still works like brand new. I am also very happy with the apps I have. I do not own a pc with iTunes to back things up on. The other day an app that I use a lot said it needed to update. Well the update was not working so I uninstalled it. Upon reinstall, it now says "must be ios 10" so now I am out an app that I need. I spent $800 on this iPad some years ago, 64gb with cellular, and I am not rich. It would be very nice if Apple would keep an area for all of us loyal customers to be able to access the apps that work on our fully functional ios 9.x devices. I feel sorry for the person in my position that has to do a full reset... They will end up with an $800 semifunctional flashlight.
Hello DJSmaug,
I read your concerns regarding your IPad older generation issues. I am a loyal Apple customer like yourself. I also do not live a lavish lifestyle and know what the meaning of hard times is really about. I must say I understand you paid a higher price than what other Apple competitors would normally charge for a tablet device. However, you kind of contridicted your issue. You mentioned your IPad is still in mint condition and still functions likes its brand new. Customers do not comment on the fact if they chose another brand while purchasing a device. They would most likely be on their 2nd or 3 rd device and wouldnt have the issue of the technology being so outdated it cannot stY compatible with the updated software. Instead you would be experiencing issues of horrible quality with no device lasting long enough to even update the software. Not to mention the difference of the money you would have saved would eventually still be spent on visits to the tech stores for support and repair from all the damage your device is dealing with from infected viruses those competitors do not take the extra effort to secure your device from. They don't care about quality. Even if they did charge the higher amount you paid. They still wouldn't care. Those companies have it setup perfect as soon as they have new features, you coincidently need a new device. I have a MacBook 2010 and it still runs like the first day I bought it 7 years ago. Do you know I have never saw another brand desk top or laptop run for that long and still be fast enough I'm not receiving wrinkles waiting for it to download something. yes i paid $1200 instead of 600. I paid for quality and didn't spend extra 600 on malware & add. Tech support w repair because I didnt need it. So extra $ went into the device instead.
I bought my ipad 3rd gen new at the store almost 6 years ago. At the time the new retinas had just come out and $800 was the price for a new ipad 3 with 64 gb and wifi/cellular. The reason it is in great shape is I have taken care of it, so no repairs were ever made. Never had any virus issues either. In comparison, a friend of mine bought an ipad 2 just prior to me and he did not take good care of it. He was a trucker and had it strapped to the dashboard, a very shakey time for his ipad. Add to that it was dropped at least twice and has a badly cracked screen. But guess what... His iPad still works and the battery is still 10 hours despite the abuse. My point... Apple has created very tough and durable devices and they know it. Would you want to have to buy a new car simply because you could no longer get tires for it? All I am saying is have like a retro app store where the apps that work for me and many many others can still be obtained. It would be a nice guesture for us folks hanging on to our little gems.

Well, actually that is exactly what Apple is offering:
Install an app on an earlier version of iOS or OS X - Apple Support
Well that is very nice and I appreciate that. I did try that, going into my purchased area as suggested. That is where I got the "must be ios 10" message. I assume then that it is the developer, Adobe, that pulled the compatable version?
Hi
Go to iCloud make sure iCloud back up turned on click backup now
When you charge an iphone /ipad it automatically backs up to iCloud Over your wifi
Go to settings - general software update it will update over your wifi
We have 4 ipads 2 iphones haven't use Our pc for them for 3 years
Almost everything can be done over your wifi.
When it,s all done go to apps store download ios 10 user guide & ipad user guide both are free.
Cheers
Brian
If the app isn't in your purchased tab, then your assumption that Adobe pulled it is most likely correct. You could try contacting Adobe and ask them directly. There is usually a link in the app description of the App in the App Store for customer support, so that's worth a shot.
There used to be another way to download an older version of an app again and that was to download the current version of the app in iTunes on a computer. Once it appeared in your history as a purchase, you used to be able to go to the App Store on your iPad, tap on the current version of the app in order to download it and you would be told that the current version would not work on your device and you would be asked if you wanted to download the compatible version for you device. I don't know if that still works and you don't have a computer to try it with anyway.
Unfortunately, even though iOS devices don't need a computer in order to function and to do just about anything that you want to do with them, there still are a few things that you can only do with an iOS device and by using iTunes on a computer. If you ever forget your password, you may experience one of the needs for iTunes that I am describing.
Purely anecdotal, but true story nonetheless, both my brother and I were forced to ultimately buy new cars because the problems that we had with our current automobiles at the time could not be resolved because parts were no longer available. His car was less than 4 years old (a Ford Explorer) mine (Saturn SUV) had just turned 6 years old. Both automobiles were running fine otherwise. His was a catalytic converter issue and mine was a transmission problem. You can rest assured that we paid far more for our vehicles than I paid for my iPad.
He did get a $4,500 voucher from Ford and they gave him a fair amount of money in a trade. I got squat from Saturn and since they were going out of business, I was SOL.
Now I am having to bring this crusade back again with the same issue... This time it is in Apple's ball court as the developer of KeyNote. Same issue, went to reinstall my purchased edition and it says "must install iOS 10" which I can not. Same for Pages. Numbers, I still had but I am guessing had I lost it... Interestingly, just tested, MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote still work on 9.3.5. That's your less wanted but major competition there. So much for what is supposed to be... and Apple, I will pose the same question I posed to Adobe... Why can't all of us hundreds of thousands of folks with older and perfectly functional iOS 9.3.5 devices have access to the last compatible version?
It looks like Apple both read and acted on my post! I was just able to download KeyNote from my purchased items area! Instead of a message stating iOS 10 only, I recieved a message offering the last compatable version. A BIG THANK YOU APPLE for listening and for doing what is right!
