Battery service or new iPad??

Would like some opinions please. I have the 3rd gen iPad and the battery usage on it is dismal. I was thinking of getting it serviced, however given it is no longer included in iOS updates I’m wondering how much longer the iPad will last and is it worth putting my money towards a new iPad instead whilst I can still get Apple education discount?
