External Hard Drive Error 36

Good day,

I have a WD My Passport with 1.8/2TB worth of files on it. I have a folder with 150 video files in it, but I'm only able to copy certain files to another location. There are about 15 video clips which when I try to copy them, the loading bar freezes and eventually I get error 36.

This happens when I want to copy the files to any other location, on the external hard drive itself or to another hard drive. I have read about cleaning dot files, but I have tried this multiple times to no avail.

The files are very important and I cannot back them up to another location, and I don't know what to do.

Any help will be appreciated. I think the files may be corrupted in a way, but sometimes they are still playable so I just need to repair the disk/files in a way.

I have tried the terminal dot clean, as well as repairing the drive in disk utility.

Thanks for the help,

Matthew

Hard drive was broken. Can't delete the thread, but thanks everyone.

Often means there is something wrong with the file such as corruption, too long a filename, etc. Try copying one file at a time.

Error -36 is I/O error. It can also occur when Mac files are stored on a Windows-format drive and you try to copy them off directly.

If that is not the case, that error means Bad Blocks on the drive. A file sitting on a Bad Block has a hole in the middle of it.

Hi Kappy,

I suspect that the files might have not copied correctly, and may be corrupt. But if they are corrupt, I am very sure that they can be salvageable. Do you know of any software to check if files are corrupt?

Thanks for the help.

I have been using the drive for 2 years now, it's been working perfectly. (It's ExFat) If I have bad blocks on the drive (which I certainly can believe is true) how would I check/test this and how could I fix this or save the files?

Thanks for the help.

It would depend on the nature of the problem and the corruption if any. Did you try copying one file at a time? Often that works though I don't quite know why.

Yes, if I try and copy one file at a time the transfer only transfers a few megabytes and then stops, on Mac Error 36 eventually comes up and on Windows you can see that the transfer just stops at a certain point. I know exactly which files can't transfer, and I need to "fix" these .mov files as there is obviously something wrong with them.
