Hard to describe, but how do I force my Mac to ...

Sorry, that makes little sense, but here's the scenario

I'm typing an email and as I need to watch the keyboard while I'm doing that (yeah I know), if another application or activity happens (dropbox sync, other notification, etc) the email window I'm typing in is no longer the primary window and whatever I'm typing is no longer being typed (as the email window is now greyed out!) - so I need to click on that email window again and make it the primary and finish typing.

It's not just email btw, any app I'm typing into!

Does that make sense? And if it does, how do I stop it from happening!!

I use growl for some notifications, is it that?

Thanks in advance if anyone can help, it's so annoying!!

When an app interrupts what you're doing because it wants attention that's called "stealing focus". It is most certainly annoying when that app assumes it is more important than what you are working on. A well-written app should offer a way to turn that off, or at least make it less obtrusive.

I use growl for some notifications, is it that?

Probably, but I don't know what else you may have installed. You have to determine if there is a setting in that app or whatever others you're using that have that ability, and disable it.

Stealing Focus, nice one! At least I know it's a thing! Thanks.

So there's no way I can make something that I'm using not be able to have it's focus stolen?

I just don't wanna use Growl notifications....

I might see if that's the cause though and try without and see if it makes a difference......

I don't use Growl so I have no idea what it does or why it does it. macOS has its own Notifications features.

So there's no way I can make something that I'm using not be able to have it's focus stolen?

The way those things work is through a constantly running background process that modifies macOS. As a general rule that's a bad idea, and I don't do it.

OK, it's not Growl (or maybe it is too). But it's Mac own notifications for calendar, mail, etc. Just tried it and had that immediate issue! So how do I stop Mac notifications from 'stealing focus'!?

FWIW, Growl hasn't been updated in 4 years. Might be time to uninstall it.

Can anyone tell me a way of ensuring the app I'm using doesn't have it's 'focus stolen'? This is driving me insane!

Can you add some detail? What apps are having their focus stolen and by what notifications? Personally I've never had that happen with any of my Macs.

See the initial question
