hdmi audio not recognized macbook pro

tried hdmi connection to external projection system: video works fine but no audio. tried to select output source but macbook pro late 2016 doesn't recognize hdmi as an output source; only sources listed are internal speakers and mini dispaly port (but no sound when I check mdp). had to use vga + audio connection instead. anybody know a fix?
