I have low-level technical expertise.

My Mac is mid 2010, 21.5" running OS Sierra 10.12.6.

Processor is 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3

4Gb 1333MHz DDr3

It is going so slowly I can't get anything done.

I've run 'cleanmymac' and it removed a lot of junk, but didn't increase the performance.

The beach ball is spinning almost non-stop.

I've noticed I have photos stored in several places and not always the same ones, could this be an issue?

You can try that, and then use the EtreCheck report to identify other files it left behind.
