imac early 2009 osx 10.8.5
i updated my password (not apple id) about a week ago. ever since i've been getting the error message "this mac can't connect to icloud because of a problem with xxxx@xxxx.com" (my apple id which is my email address) "open icloud to fix this problem" with the "later" and the "icloud preferences" buttons as options. i click on the preferences option.
i then get the screen that says an apple id verification code is required. when that is texted to me there is no place to enter it on my mac! only my apple id and password. however if i try to log in straight from icloud.com, no problem. all i want to do is get rid of that pesky error message. i don't know what the problem is since i can still log into icloud itself from this mac. i don't really care about this mac having access to icloud except for the find my iphone feature. the only reason i use icloud at all is to back up my iphone.
any options to get rid of the error message?
Try typing the password and the passcode in the same box. For example, password5678
See this -- What to do after you change your Apple ID email address or password - Apple Support

where do i enter the 2 step code? when i click on okay it just goes back to where i was before, the "apple id verification code is required" box goes away but all else remains - with no place to enter the ver' code
Use this guide to verify your trusted devices by first going to https://appleid.apple.com

both in the same box did it! thanks. didn't dawn on me to put them together. never been asked to do it that way before, with apple products or elsewhere.
You are welcome. It is different. I'm not sure why it is so different.
By your screenshot, you have an older OSX version. There is no dialog available for the code.
If you update OSX, this issue will likely go away.
Thank you!!! I have been working on this for a week!!!
OK, here's how I fixed it, and I can't believe I didn't think of this sooner!
- Go to appleid.apple.com, sign in using password and supplied authentication code
- Click the Edit button next to your account details and turn 2-factor authentication off. You'll have to supply new security questions and a rescue e-mail.
- Click the blue Done button to save changes. You'll get notification(s) that 2-factor authentication has been turned off. Wait a couple of minutes for the change to propagate to various servers.
- Apple menu -> System Preferences -> iCloud and put in the AppleID password.
This worked for me. After over a week of being locked out of iCloud, App Store, and iTunes, I'm back in business! Now that I'm back in iCloud, I may try to re-enable 2-factor authentication. Or not.
Worked for me too. Now I feel the need to express my bewilderment. This is the stupidest process they could have come up with and biggest time suck trying to figure it out.
Thank you so much! 2 factor authentication caused me so many problems on my Macbook.
Thank you!!!
Eric's solution worked well. What a shortfall in the software interface to put people in this situation. Frustrating time waster.
