password protected pdf files in Preview

Since Mac OS 10.12.4 update I can no longer open password protected pdf files in Preview. Regular pdf files open as usual.

I can open them in Chrome and then open them in Preview but that seems like a pretty lame go-around.

Anyone figure this out yet?

The only way that Preview will automatically open a password protected PDF is if you set the password, and at that time, you also checked the option to have Keychain remember that password — if that Keychain option was present at all.

Some applications, (e.g. Apple Pages v6.1) do not offer Keychain selection to remember the PDF password.

I have been receiving a payroll pdf for years now.  I click on it and Preview opens it and asks for the password.  I enter it and the file opens.  As of yesterday and the 10.12.4 update, all I see is a blank grey box instead of the info in the pdf.  I have tested older files and the same thing now happens. The same thing is now happening on my iPhone 7. 

When I try to open thesefiles on my old Mac running 10.12.1 everything opens just fine.

The application that generates that payroll PDF may have changed the type of PDF produced. Preview is not a full PDF specification, and there are some PDF formats that it will not open, or image properly.

Your plan B is to open that payroll PDF in the current release of Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, which because it is controlled by Adobe, will have the latest PDF support.

I'm having the same issue with iOS 10.3.1. I also tried downloading the adobe app and opening it that way but that doesn't work either.

I did the same thing.  El Capitan works fine with Preview for password protected files.  As soon as I upgraded to Sierra I started getting the blank grey nothing after the correct password entry.  This is very problematic at work as all of our aviation files require extra security.  Glad to see the resident software provided by Apple doesn't work...again.
