Macbook Air Font Size Connected to 4K Displays

I have a 4K television and a 4K projector. When I connect my Macbook Air (purchased solely because it is portable and outputs a 4K signal) and click "mirror displays" in "Display Preferences" the font, indeed anything on the desktop or a connected hard drive almost disappears.

If I "scale" the displays then I don't get 4K. I don't seem to have the same problem with my iMac perhaps because of higher resolution larger screen.

Is there a way to correct this so I can read the font and still output 4K?
